Decorating with Color

Color is where we begin in decorating. It is the tool that we use to create effective interiors. Color is perhaps the most powerful technique that a designer can use to affect emotions. That is why it is important to consider color choices carefully. What is the function of the room and who will be primarily living in the space are questions that will help answer what color scheme to employ?

When color is done correctly, it can enhance the feelings of health and well being. Color can influence the perceived temperature of a room, making you feel cool or warm. Also, it can control the visual aspects of space, making a large room appears cozy or a small room, look spacious. Of course color has the power to influence romance, and to create a mysterious setting.

There are basically two choices when selecting a color scheme. For a more bold interior you can use a "complementary" color scheme. This is when the colors are opposite one another on the color wheel, such as red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange. If you like your room to be more serene, you can go with the "analogous" color scheme. These are colors that are close to each other on the color wheel, such as yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange.

When deciding on color in a room that already have decorative items in it, such as an oriental rug or a sofa, I love to pull the colors from an existing pattern. It is an effective technique that will pull a room together. I can't tell you how many times I have heard, "Wow, I can't believe how window treatments complete a room!"
